OVER THE EDGE

It was the coolest thing I've been a part of. Ever. I signed up to be a ropes volunteer this past weekend with an organization called Over the Edge. Non-profits hire OTE for fundraising. Essentially, people that donate 1,000 dollars or more to the non-profit, in this case it was Special Olympics Washington, they get the once in a life time opportunity to go over the edge. They raised over 175,000 dollars! Because I was volunteering my time, I got to rappel for free for my training.

Let me break this down for you:

We rappeled off of the Rainier building downtown Seattle.

This building is 42 stories high. That is 515 feet! The HIGHEST rappel that Over the Edge has ever done. Before Saturday, the highest building they did rappels off of was 372 feet. We stepped it up! And really, the equipment and ropes are really only rated at about 350 feet. Don't worry, the ropes were long enough.

I had no idea that my level of involvement would include actually TRAINING the average Joes how to use their rappel devices and get them to trust the system. I had supervision by the pros, of course, but I actually stood at the edge anchored in and talked people over the edge.

It was the best. Such an incredible experience.
